Vietnam welcomed 15.9 million international tourists in eight months

In January–August 2026, Vietnam welcomed 15.9 million international tourists — a 14.5% increase compared to the same period last year. The number of domestic tourist trips reached 113 million, up by 6.6%. Tourism revenue totaled 781 trillion dong (approx. $29.7 billion), which is 10.4% higher than last year's figure.

These data were presented by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism at a meeting of the State Steering Committee for Tourism on September 28. Among the destinations maintaining high growth rates, the agency named Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and the provinces of An Giang, Lam Dong, and Khanh Hoa.

By the end of the year, Vietnam expects to welcome 25 million international tourists. In the first eight months, the country has achieved 63.6% of this target. For domestic tourism, the benchmark is set at 150 million trips; by the end of August, the number reached more than three-quarters of the annual plan.

According to the data presented at the meeting, Vietnam has more than 44,000 accommodation facilities and 4,600 companies licensed to organize international tours. At the same time, industry representatives pointed to persistent challenges regarding transport accessibility to certain destinations, service quality, and staff training for working with international guests.

The authorities plan to develop new tourism products, including night-time, medical, ecological, and community-based tourism. By 2027, every province and centrally-run city must prepare at least one distinctive tourism product characteristic of its territory.

Special attention will be paid to preparing Phu Quoc for the 2027 APEC summit events. This includes infrastructure development, destination promotion, organizing travel between tourist sites, and ensuring guest safety.
