On January 28th, construction began on two major tourist zones in Phu Quoc Island, with a total cost of 69.55 trillion VND (approximately $2.6 billion). The developer is Sun Group. The projects are the Bai Dat Do (Ruby Beach) area and the Ong Quan ecotourism area. These are 2 of the 21 infrastructure projects approved to prepare the island for the APEC 2027 summit.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Drawing on the experience of hosting APEC in Vietnam in 2006 and 2017, the Prime Minister emphasized that infrastructure readiness is a key factor for the successful hosting of the event.
These two projects will build approximately 12,000 hotel rooms and apartments, as well as shopping centers, waterfront promenades, and public squares.
Bai Dat Do (Ruby Beach) is an 88.4-hectare area with an investment of approximately 64 trillion VND ($2.4 billion), located near the APEC venue. The key element of the project will be 15 high-rise hotels on the beachfront with nearly 6,500 rooms, creating a full-fledged "hotel city" in the center of Phu Quoc. The developer compares the future appearance of the area to "a second Sydney."
In the Bai Dat Do area, 13 premium hotels are planned under the brands of the five largest international hotel groups. These include Accor (SO, MGallery, Grand Mercure), Hilton (Hilton Hotels & Resorts and Conrad), Marriott (W, Marriott, Westin, Le Méridien, Courtyard by Marriott), and Lotte. Some brands (SO, Conrad, and W Hotels) will enter the Vietnamese market for the first time.
Investments in the Ong Quan ecological area are estimated at approximately 5.55 trillion VND ($0.2 billion). This is an area on the hills near Sunset Town, where approximately 5,200 hotel rooms and apartments, commercial zones, and landscaped walking spaces are planned.
At APEC 2025 in Korea, due to a shortage of hotels, some participants were accommodated far from the venues, including other regions and cruise liners. And by APEC 2017 in Da Nang, some facilities were not completed on time. This affected the organization and reduced the overall effect of the summit for the host country, including in terms of attracting investment and tourism after the event. Therefore, in preparing Phu Quoc for APEC 2027, attention is focused on the "bottlenecks" of past summits - primarily on accommodating guests.
