One of China's largest construction companies, China Pacific Construction Group (CPCG), has taken the first official step towards potential involvement in the development of the Ho Chi Minh City metro network.
On June 12, the company signed a memorandum of cooperation with the city's Department of Construction. The document outlines joint exploration of transport infrastructure projects, technology and investment information exchange, as well as cooperation in developing technical standards and training specialists.
The signing of the agreement comes amidst Ho Chi Minh City's ambitious plans for urban rail transport development. Following the launch of the first metro line, Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien, at the end of 2024, city authorities have set a target to construct approximately 200 km of new lines by 2030.
In recent weeks, this marks the second major Chinese player to show interest in Ho Chi Minh City's metro projects. In early June, Guangzhou Metro Group opened a representative office in the city. The company is already involved in the development of metro Line 2 and the preparation of the feasibility study for Line 4.
Until now, the development of Ho Chi Minh City's metro has largely been associated with Japanese funding and contractors. The first metro line, nearly 20 km long, was built with Japanese support and commissioned after many years of preparation and construction.
China Pacific Construction Group is among the world's largest infrastructure companies. According to Fortune Global 500, the group's revenue for 2024 was approximately $75 billion, placing it 170th in the global ranking of largest companies.
In Vietnam, CPCG is already involved in several major infrastructure projects. In 2025, the company secured contracts for the construction of Tu Lien and Ngoc Hoi bridges in Hanoi, as well as metro Line 5 Van Cao – Hoa Lac.
Among the priority metro projects in Ho Chi Minh City, authorities name the Tham Luong – Ben Thanh – Thu Thiem – Long Thanh Airport line, which is intended to connect the city with the under-construction Long Thanh International Airport. Also, by 2030, the construction of lines Ben Thanh – Can Gio, Binh Duong – Suoi Tien, Tan Son Nhat – Phu Huu, and Thu Dau Mot – Thao Dan is planned.
