Construction has officially commenced in Vietnam on a high-speed railway line that will connect Hanoi with Quang Ninh province. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 12th, with the participation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
The project is estimated to cost over 147 trillion Vietnamese dong (approximately $5.6 billion), excluding land clearing expenses, and is being implemented by VinSpeed High Speed Rail Investment and Development JSC, a subsidiary of Vingroup.
The railway, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2028, will span 120.2 km and pass through Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, and Quang Ninh.
The maximum speed of the trains will reach 350 km/h, although it will be limited to 120 km/h within Hanoi. The line will be fully electrified and built to international standards with a track gauge of 1,435 mm.
Travel time between Hanoi and Quang Ninh will be reduced to approximately 23 minutes, which is 5-7 times faster than the current travel time.
The route includes:
- the Co Loa station (Hanoi),
- intermediate stations Gia Binh (Bac Ninh), Ninh Xa (Hai Phong), and Yen Tu (Quang Ninh),
- the Ha Long terminal (Quang Ninh).
The project will utilize modern high-speed trains with signaling systems and equipment from Siemens Mobility. The technology will be gradually integrated into the VinSpeed system during operation.
The Hanoi – Quang Ninh line is the second railway project being implemented by VinSpeed. In December, the company began construction of the Ben Thanh – Can Gio line in Ho Chi Minh City, which is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2028.
