Construction has commenced on the Lien Chieu container port in Da Nang. The total investment is estimated at approximately $2 billion (about 45.3 trillion VND). The project aims to enhance the region's logistics capabilities, support the development of the port industry, and strengthen Vietnam's position in global maritime supply chains.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 25th. According to Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc, the project's implementation will be an important driver of economic growth and will also contribute to strengthening national defense and security.
The Lien Chieu project is being implemented jointly by Hateco Group and APM Terminals B.V.. The port will include 8 container berths with a total length of about 2,750 meters and will be able to serve vessels with a capacity of up to 18,000 TEU.
The projected capacity of the future terminal is estimated at 5.7 million TEU per year (approximately 74 million tons of cargo). In the first phase, it is planned to achieve a handling volume of up to 4 million TEU annually within three years after launch. The project is designed for 10 years and is being implemented in three phases from 2026 to 2036.
Special attention is being paid to creating a modern logistics ecosystem. The port will include barge terminals, warehouses, customs control zones, container yards, and a unified operational center. Direct integration with the national railway network is provided for the development of multimodal transportation.
A separate emphasis is placed on the concept of a “green and smart port.” The infrastructure will employ Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, artificial intelligence, process automation, and clean energy solutions to reduce emissions and meet environmental standards.
According to the authorities, Vietnam's strategic location with over 3,200 km of coastline and proximity to key international maritime routes creates favorable conditions for the development of the maritime economy. As part of the national plan for the development of the port system for 2021–2030 with a perspective up to 2050, Lien Chieu is considered as a future international logistics hub and a key point of the East-West Economic Corridor.
It is additionally noted that about 3.5 trillion VND of government investment is directed towards the development of general infrastructure, which accelerates the preparation of the territory for the project's implementation. The authorities urged investors to ensure high construction quality, adherence to deadlines and safety, and to actively introduce advanced management and operational technologies.
