Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has instructed to expedite the construction of Long Thanh Airport in Dong Nai province and ensure the launch of commercial flights no later than the fourth quarter of 2026. He stated this on March 29 during an inspection of the construction site.
The construction of Long Thanh International Airport was approved by the National Assembly in 2015 and by the government in 2020. The active phase of construction began in August 2023, and the first test flight took place in September 2025.
As of the end of March 2026, approximately 9,000 people are working on the project, with work completed for 64.1 trillion dong ($2.4 billion), which is 74% of the total cost.
Contractors are revising schedules with the aim of completing the main works by September 2026 to ensure the airport's launch in the fourth quarter.
To date, key facilities have been completed or are in the final stages, including the air traffic control center, the runway, and the passenger terminal. Baggage systems, hangars, engineering networks, and internal transport infrastructure are being built in parallel.
In addition, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh instructed to accelerate the construction of transport infrastructure around the airport, including highways and railway lines that will connect Long Thanh with Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces, as well as a 40-kilometer road between Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports. At the same time, work is underway to develop related infrastructure, including the formation of an "airport city."
