Vinspeed, a subsidiary of Vingroup, has received approval to build a new high-speed metro line that will connect the center of Ho Chi Minh City with the coastal district of Can Gio. Construction is scheduled to begin on December 19th.
Can Gio is a coastal district located approximately 50 kilometers south of Ho Chi Minh City's center. The area is undergoing rapid development, with Vingroup implementing a large-scale project of approximately 39 hectares, planned for residential blocks, hotels, and recreational areas. The new metro line will stretch approximately 54 kilometers, starting at September 23 Park in the city center and ending near the future development in Can Gio. Travel time between these points will be reduced to just over 20 minutes.
The investment volume is approximately 102 trillion VND (≈ $3.9 billion). Trains on the new line will be able to reach speeds of up to 350 km/h.
In the first phase, two stations will open – Ben Thanh and Can Gio. Can Gio will also house a depot and traffic control center. Six trains plus a reserve train – a total of 56 cars – will be purchased to operate the line. Four more stations – Tan Thuan, Tan My, Nha Be, and Binh Khanh – may be added later if passenger traffic increases.
The opening of traffic is scheduled for 2028. Trains will run daily from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, approximately every 20 minutes.
The line will effectively transform the journey to the sea from the center of Ho Chi Minh City into a short metro ride.
