On January 15, 2026, construction officially began on Metro Line No. 2 Ben Thanh - Tham Luong in Ho Chi Minh City. The project is being implemented as part of a long-term plan to create a complete urban metro network.
Metro Line No. 2 will connect the central Ben Thanh district with the northwestern part of the city and will pass through some of Ho Chi Minh City's busiest streets.
Key project parameters:
- Total length — 11.3 km, including 9.3 km underground and about 2 km of elevated section
- 12 stations
- Investment volume — 55.2 trillion VND (approximately $2.2 billion)
- Planned completion date — 2030
At the first stage, trains of three cars will run on the line with a capacity of up to 14.4 thousand passengers per hour. After the transition to six-car trains, the capacity will increase to 40 thousand passengers per hour.
The construction of Line No. 2 is part of a large-scale metro development plan in Ho Chi Minh City:
- the launch of 7 metro lines is planned by 2035
- by 2045, the network should expand to 27 lines
- the total length of the network will be about 1,024 km
- the Ben Thanh station will become the key interchange hub of the system
Ho Chi Minh City's first metro line has already shown high demand from passengers: in 2025, Line No. 1 carried about 18.95–20.56 million passengers, an average of about 52 thousand trips per day.
The new line should help relieve urban roads, improve transport links between the northwestern districts and the center, and support the development of properties around metro stations.
