Construction has commenced in Ho Chi Minh City on the QTM International Port, valued at nearly VND 6.9 trillion (approximately $261 million). The project is being developed in the Phú Mỹ district, within the Cái Mép – Thị Vải deep-water port complex, one of Vietnam's largest port complexes.
The port will span an area of over 80 hectares and is designed to handle 16 million tons of cargo annually. The project will also include a logistics and warehousing complex with a total area of nearly 200,000 sq. m.
Construction is divided into two phases and will last from 2026 to 2034. Upon completion, the port will feature eight berths capable of accommodating vessels with a capacity of up to 60,000 tons. Future plans include adapting the infrastructure to service vessels with a capacity of up to 100,000 tons.
Hoang Nguyen Dinh, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, noted that following the administrative consolidation of territories, the demand for cargo and raw material transportation has significantly increased. According to him, the city needs to continue developing a modern logistics network with regional and international connectivity.
According to city authorities, in the first six months of 2026, the volume of maritime and inland waterway transport in Ho Chi Minh City increased by 7.3% compared to the same period last year.
Pham Gia Tuc, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, stated that logistics costs in the country currently account for 14–16% of GDP, making the development of modern port infrastructure essential for reducing transportation expenses and enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese exports. He also urged the investor to accelerate construction and commission the first phase of the project within the next 11 months to support Ho Chi Minh City's goal of achieving double-digit economic growth rates.
Ho Chi Minh City boasts a coastline of approximately 110 kilometers and is one of Vietnam's largest maritime transport hubs. The Cái Mép – Thị Vải port complex is among the world's largest container ports, providing direct sea links to European and North American markets without the need for intermediate cargo transshipment.
The construction of the new port is expected to increase the city's port infrastructure capacity and meet the growing demand for cargo transportation, driven by industrial development, foreign trade, and expanding economic activity in southern Vietnam.
