World Bank: Vietnam to enter top 20 largest economies in the world by 2036

According to a forecast published by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) in cooperation with the World Bank, Vietnam could become one of the top 20 largest economies in the world by 2036. Within the region, the country has the potential to rank as the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia, behind only Indonesia.

According to the International Monetary Fund, in 2024 Vietnam ranks 34th in the world by nominal GDP, with an indicator of around $430 billion US. According to the CEBR forecast, by 2036 the country's economic volume could exceed $1.3 trillion, provided sustainable growth rates are maintained.

Experts attribute Vietnam's dynamic development to a number of key factors:

  • growth in industrial production and exports,
  • active digitalization of the economy,
  • integration into global trade supply chains,
  • high rates of attracting foreign direct investment.

The Government of Vietnam is also pursuing an ambitious strategy: by 2045, the country intends to join the high-income economy category, which requires an average annual growth rate of at least 6%.

According to the World Bank's latest macroeconomic review, Vietnam's GDP growth is projected at 6.8% in 2025 and 6.5% in 2026. Forecasts remain positive despite global economic instability, thanks to domestic demand, a stable manufacturing base, and successful foreign trade policy.
