Vietnam is launching a program to teach schoolchildren about artificial intelligence. Starting in December, students in grades 1-12 in several schools will begin studying AI, and by May 2026, the Ministry of Education and Training will develop a model for nationwide implementation.
The curriculum includes four key blocks: AI ethics, working with data and algorithms, methods and applications, and the basics of creating simple AI systems.
Elementary school students will learn the principles of AI through simple applications. In middle school, children will learn to use AI for educational tasks. In high school, students will learn to create simple AI systems, master complex problem-solving skills, and learn about career opportunities in the technology field.
AI education will be integrated into the curriculum through existing subjects to avoid increasing the workload.
Teachers will also test AI tools for lesson planning, classroom management, automating routine tasks, and more objective assessment of student knowledge.
The program fits into the national digital strategy. Experts believe that early exposure of schoolchildren to AI will be an important step in preparing personnel for the country's digital economy. Similar initiatives are being implemented in Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea.
