On January 16th, state-owned telecommunications company Viettel began construction of Vietnam's first semiconductor chip manufacturing plant. The construction is underway in the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park on the outskirts of Hanoi.
The future plant will cover an area of 27 hectares. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. In 2028–2030, the facility will operate in pilot mode, followed by adjustments to production processes and capacity expansion.
The plant will encompass all six stages of the semiconductor chain, including the most technologically complex stage – the manufacturing of silicon wafers, which has not previously been carried out in Vietnam. Thus, the enterprise will, for the first time, enable a complete cycle of semiconductor chip production within the country.
The plant's products will be intended for use in telecommunications, the aerospace industry, the automotive industry, and medical equipment.
Currently, Vietnam is actively developing in the field of semiconductor product assembly and testing. Major international companies, including Intel, Samsung Electronics, Amkor Technology, Qualcomm, and Marvell Technology, already operate in the country. According to estimates by the Semiconductor Industry Association of the USA and Boston Consulting Group, Vietnam's share of global chip assembly and testing capacity could grow from 1% in 2022 to 8–9% by 2032.
In parallel, the Vietnamese government plans to train 50,000 microchip design engineers by 2030, and to increase the total number of specialists in the semiconductor industry to more than 100,000 by 2040.
