Expansion work on the international terminal (T2) at Da Nang Airport commenced on May 20. The project is being implemented by Da Nang International Terminal Investment and Operation JSC, with a total investment of nearly 1.5 trillion VND (approximately $57 million).
Upon completion, the terminal's area will exceed 21,000 m². The number of check-in counters will increase from 54 to 85, and the number of boarding gates with jet bridges will rise from 4 to 7. This will alleviate terminal congestion and expedite passenger services.
Terminal T2 was commissioned in 2017 for the APEC Summit and is currently considered one of the most modern in Vietnam. In 2024, 2025, and 2026, it received a five-star Skytrax rating — making it the only terminal in the country with this status for three consecutive years.
Passenger traffic at the airport has exceeded initial projections for several years. In 2019, the terminal served over 7.1 million passengers — 79% above its design capacity. In 2024, the figure reached 6.18 million people, and in 2025, it grew to 6.81 million.
Architecturally, the project will continue the terminal's existing concept, inspired by 'seagull wings'. The new section of the building will maintain a unified style, with an interior focus on natural lighting, greenery, and improved ventilation to enhance passenger comfort.
The terminal expansion is part of the aviation infrastructure development strategy for Central Vietnam until 2030, with a vision to 2050. This strategy includes Da Nang International Airport and Chu Lai Airport. The latter is planned for development alongside the eponymous economic zone in Quang Nam province. The combined capacity of the two airports is projected to reach 25 million passengers per year.
