Vietnam ranked ninth in the world for residents' and tourists' safety

Vietnam ranked ninth for safety among 110 economies in the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Travel & Tourism Development Index 2026. The country scored 6.52 out of a possible seven points in the Safety & Security category, climbing 18 positions compared to the recalculated data for 2024. The report was published on September 25, 2026.

Singapore took first place in the category with a score of 6.87 points, followed by Qatar and Saudi Arabia. According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, safety was one of the metrics in which the country achieved its highest position in the index.

Safety & Security is a distinct category in the tourism ranking that assesses the safety of the environment for residents, tourists, and businesses. It includes five indicators: the homicide rate, the impact of terrorism, deaths from organized violence, confidence in local police, and the feeling of safety when walking alone at night. The assessment combines statistics with the results of public opinion polls.

Data on the perception of personal safety is also featured in the Global Safety Report 2025 by research company Gallup. According to 2024 survey results, 88% of Vietnam's residents felt safe walking alone at night in their city or neighborhood. The global average was 73%. The difference between Vietnam and the global result is 15 percentage points.

In Gallup's Law and Order Index, Vietnam scored 93 out of 100 points—the same as China and Iceland. This index is based on four questions: whether people trust the local police, whether they feel safe walking alone at night, whether they have had money or property stolen in the past year, and whether they have been assaulted or mugged. Thus, it takes into account both the perception of safety and personal experience with crime.

At the same time, road safety is not included in the Safety & Security category of the WEF ranking. Ninth place does not reflect traffic accident risks and does not imply an absence of theft or fraud. The result pertains specifically to the metrics of public and personal safety outlined in the study's methodology.

In the overall Travel & Tourism Development Index, Vietnam ranked 52nd out of 110, rising seven positions compared to 2024. Its final score was 4.15 points. In addition to safety, the ranking takes into account infrastructure, natural and cultural resources, pricing, and other conditions for tourism development. In total, it features 17 categories and 102 indicators.
