On January 7, 2026, Ho Chi Minh City authorities approved a sea road project between Can Gio district and Vung Tau city, proposed by Vingroup. The new route will reduce travel time between Ho Chi Minh City and the coast to approximately one hour.
The road will run through the sea and consist of bridges and a 3.1 km underwater tunnel. This option was chosen to avoid interfering with the movement of sea vessels.
Currently, the connection between Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau mainly runs along the Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway. This road is often congested, and travel time is difficult to predict, especially on weekends.
According to the approved plan, the road will be six lanes wide, with a total length of about 14 km. The creation of two artificial islands is planned to connect the bridges and the tunnel.
The project cost exceeds 104 trillion dong (approximately US$3.94 billion). Vingroup will fully finance the construction. Work is scheduled to begin in June 2026 and be completed in the second quarter of 2029.
Once the road is put into operation, it will simplify communication between Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau and reduce the load on National Highway No. 51.
